Made.
Make. Mine. DIY. Quilts
Think you can
make a quilt yourself? You can. Artist Valerie Page is running Beginners Quilting
Workshops that cover the basic skills of quilt
making. The classes dive into topics like colour theory or
advanced quilting techniques for the pro's looking to brush up
on their craft.
There's nothing quite like the
feeling of warmth under a quilt,
especially if it's one you made for yourself
or a loved one. Impress your sister to the ends of
the earth with a hand made baby quilt for her firstborn.
Scare away the zombies when they attack with a lap quilt!
Brighten up a dreary room with a colourful quilt hanging on the wall, and don't forget to boast that
you made each and every stitch of it.
FEEL THE WARMTH UNDER A
QUILT |
PageQuilts can't stop you from looking at Valerie's
gorgeous quilts and thinking "hey I could make that myself",
but we can set you and your steadfast DIY ethic in the right
direction.
Quilts aren't some relic from the
1930's, they are a modern interpretation of an age old
skill. What was once a necessary re-purposing of
scraps of fabric born of depression-era thriftiness,
has evolved into a means of expressing artistic vision on
par with painting. Unlike canvas you can live with quilts around you, keep
warm under them, and swoon over the haptic sense of every
threadstroke.
A quilt is many small swatches of different fabrics,
combined into a textile that is quite literally the sum
of its parts. Choose the wrong pattern, assemble
the fabrics without thinking and you end up
with a Monet whose colours are all scrambled
up. Valerie has over 25 years experience quilting, so let
her be your Yoda.
Only those who make a quilt themselves can actually
appreciate the work that goes into each piece. Sign up, the
world needs more quilts, and PageQuilts would rather teach you
how to make one yourself than let you walk away quiltless and
chilly on a late winters night.
